The "Digital Brain" shader credited above no longer runs on this site. It served the launch well, but its glowing Voronoi circuitry was busy enough that every block of text needed a heavy blurred panel to stay readable.
It has been replaced with an original animation: a nebula depth field. Three layers of procedurally generated clouds drift at different scales and speeds so that nearer wisps pass in front of more distant ones, with sparse stars scattered between them. The palette is drawn from this site's own cyan, with occasional pockets of pink. Nothing in it moves quickly — the whole pattern takes the better part of a minute to turn over — which is the point. It should read as depth behind the writing rather than something competing with it.
The new shader is fully procedural, so it no longer needs the noise texture the old one sampled for its colors. Credit for the original effect stays where it is; it was a good place to start from.
